"Summer" Vacation
Karla and her daughter Emily (7) are here in Portland visiting us for their "summer" vacation. I think it is more like an really early spring vacation according to the weather. Today we went to the 100th Rose parade downtown and it was 57 degrees with pouring down rain for 3 hours. Fun times! When you are used to 85 degrees and air conditioning, it is a big change to come to this cold damp area. Dang I miss the warm Iowa summer weather! Now we are sitting around the house with a fire in the fireplace with slippers and fleece on. Hello Pacific Northwest.
Tomorrow we are planning on going to the coast (as the natives call it here) to see the ocean. No swim wear is required here! Bring your wool sweater.
Thank you Patti for keeping the birthday thing going on the blog. But, did you really need to put my age on it?

Hey, Lisa, think it only fair since everyone now knows how old I am. Besides, as Mom says, it's only a number. Happy Birthday!
And, by the way, Annette and my oldest son, Aaron, are also Northwesterners . . . both reside in Seattle.
Summer in the "good ole south" is hot and humid at a steamy temp of 89 and getting warmer as the week goes on. Right now I wouldn't mind that 56 degree temp.
And Lisa, you can thank your sister Dawn for the age thing...she wanted to know, so we're just trying to please!
They must not have shared the news about our cold, damp Iowa weather in May, so we're not much into summer here either! Too early. We're battling flooding conditions instead.
Dan and Sherri have moving news too and will soon be joining the rest of the Schettlers' in Seattle. You'll all have to exchange emails and phone numbers and plan your own little reunion!
Looks the Schettler's are taking up the northwest corner of the country. You SHOULD all have a get together. How did that work out that way???
I think Dawn and Annette started it. (there's 41 years of maturity for you!)
Are Dan and Sherri prepared for the cost of living up there in Seattle? And the weather? Those are my 2 big things that I am having a hard time adjusting to.
I'm sure it is an adjustment but hopefully it will get easier as you settle in. Sherri's family is from Seattle so she and Dan have been back a few times. He says he really likes it and is looking forward to the move. Remember, they are also coming from Denver...cost of living is probably at least the same, if not more. But that's about all I know...I can't speak for them. Sherri has a teaching job already lined up and Dan's company also has offices there so he is planning a transfer at this time.
Welcome to life in "suburbia." One of many reasons we left the suburbs of Chicago. Everything cost more in major metropolitans. I do miss the variety of foods that small town grocers here do not provide, but the small town atmosphere can't be beat. I guess the Iowa farm girl in me never really left. Never wanted to live in the city so opted for either a suburb or just outside of the city limit. City life is too busy and noisy for my liking.
