Science Fair Winners

Well, it's science fair season at our house again! This year, both Nathan and Ryan, placed at both the school level and the county level. Nathan received first place and Ryan honorable mention at the school level. They both went on to the county level (as pictured here) where Nathan received Reserved Grand Champion and Ryan honorable mention. They are both eligible for regional at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Unfortunately, Ryan has declined going on. He's not quite as secure in science competitions as Nathan is. March 5th, 6th and 7th is the competition dates. Nathan's entry is on "Fuels of the Future" and Ryan's was "Lights, Camera, Capture!" Nathan's experiment involved creating hydrogen to run a two stroke engine. (Yes, we had a few explosions!! But. . . the house is still standing and intact.) Ryan's project involved the use of a strobe light which created multiple images in single photos.

Oh man, I am seeing my future with my own son in this post, and it scares me. Note to self, make sure all fire extinguishers are fully operational when Sebastian enters his first science fair...

We had a rule that all tests had to be done in the garage near the door. So . . . it really wasn't as bad as it sounded, although we did feel the vibrations inside and lots of "whoa...did you hear that?" Nathan made a great impression on the judges with this experiment. We call him "Einstein". By the way, his theory failed on this experiment, but that's what science is.

That is awesome Debbie! Good job raising smart kids! And thanks for posting. It's fun to see what other families are doing.

For those interested . . . check out "Future Cars" on the Discovery Channel. A documentary on the future of different fuels on cars of the future...Nathan's inspiration for his project. I know...not exactly everyone's cup of tea for a subject but I found it interesting what cars may be like and what they may be fueled with. UT is already using "vegetable oil" for fuel in some of their campus vehicles.
